Country: Chile
To prepare myself to be culturally responsive to this family
I would:
- Do extensive online research on the country
- Research the countries education system
- Learn the basic of their language so that I was able to communicate better
- Ask my professional colleagues for advice and help and any support they may have about this area
- Find some symbol of their country to incorporate into the setting to welcome them and make them feel safe and secure in this new world.
I would hope that these preparations would benefit me by
allowing my to get to know their culture and home country before meeting them.
This would give me the background knowledge I needed to begin the transition
with them while also showing them the effort I put into it. This would hopefully make them feel more
comfortable with me. I think it would
benefit them by making them feel more welcome and not so out of place. I would want the transition to be as easy as
possible and with a knowledge of their country, they will feel more likely to
work closely with me and allow me to help them.
Hi Lynette,
ReplyDeleteI like that you chose Chile! I chose the Dominican Republic! I think it is important to do a little research about the culture of a country that we aren't familiar with so we have an idea of what to expect. You gave me something to consider when trying to foster a culturally responsive environment. Becoming familiar with the educational system in that country would definitely help so we as educators understand how best to connect and reach those children.
Hi Lynette.
ReplyDeleteI agree that being familiar with their educational system could be useful. This knowledge could help you to understand their reactions to our educational environment. Chat boards used by teachers who teach abroad may be helpful. You could also use the internet to see if the country has a website for their early childhood system and educational system. I agree that putting in the effort to learn about their country will help them feel more welcome and more at ease.
Aloha Lynette,
ReplyDeleteI would also find something symbolic of the country the family comes from also. Including that symbol instills a sense of patriotic pride. Nothing says you are included more than a representation of respect from where someone comes from. Thanks for your thoughts on that.
